The motorways in Belgium

Brussels can be reached easily from neighbouring countries due to a very dense road network linked to the main European arteries.

There are several motorways running throughout the country and most are lit at night. Even better: there are no paying sections of road in Belgium! Most of the main motorways naturally pass by Brussels and other main towns:

- E19: Amsterdam-Utrecht-Rotterdam- Breda-Anvers-Brussels-Mons- Valenciennes-Paris

- E40: London-Calais -Ostende-Ghent- Brussels-Liège-Maastricht (to the Netherlands) or Aix-la-Chapelle (towards Germany)

- E411: Brussels-Namur-Luxembourg (towards eastern France, Germany and Switzerland)

Brussels is surrounded by an outer ring road called the «Ring», with exits that are sometimes difficult to decipher. It is very easy to get lost here, especially as the southern section takes you over 20 kilometres from the town centre. At peak times, there are often jams on the Ring during the morning and evening rush hours, especially at major crossroads, such as Grand Bigard (in the Antwerp direction) and the "Carrefour Léonard".
