Discovering Cyclocross

There are in Belgium a few activities that stir fond memories. Activities where humdrum surrounds are transformed with Breughelesque festivity. A cyclocross competition is certainly one of them.

Cyclo-what?

Cyclo-cross is a discipline run on 2.5 to 3.5 circuits, including clearings, roads, country lanes and paths through forests. The riders have to do several laps of the circuit over a period of no more than an hour. To make their way along steep paths, muddy tracks and artificial obstacles, sometimes the riders even have to carry their bikes.

This discipline, which is splendid in itself, is at the same time an unbeatable school of cycling, where you have to combine riding technique, courage and the peak of physical fitness. Technical back up is allowed, which is one of the main differences with mountain bike disciplines.

Ardour of the Fans

The riders are supported tooth and nail by ardent spectators. The Tour de France sends us images each summer of roadside wine and cheese picnics. Cyclocross, like the spring classics, like the Tour, is also a jamboree! To experience the cyclocross environment, you'll have to don your boots, wade around in the mud, find your vantage point over the circuit, choose your favourite competitor, down a couple of beers and chat a little with your neighbours.
