Tour & Taxis
For few years, Tour & Taxis has become an invetibale place to visit in Brussels
Let's take a step back in time. For nearly a century, Tour & Taxis was the central hub for the transit of goods through the capital. At the end of the 19th century, Belgium was the fifth economic power in Europe. In order to meet the country's commercial needs, the Brussels town authorities developed a new site that for the first time in history brought together complementary functions: levying customs, the storage of goods and above all transport by rail, water and road.Tour & Taxis, a place for many activities
Inaugurated by Leopold II in 1900, the Tour & Taxis building site was completed in 1907 and contained some highly prestigious buildings, such as the Royal Warehouse, the Sheds, the Harbour Station and the Customs Office....Tour & Taxis thus brought with it a burst of dynamism to the neighbourhood and transformed the right bank of the canal into a thriving economic and industrial centre. The site experienced many glorious years and in the 60s over 3,000 workers were employed on site!Greatness and decline
Unfortunately, the activities behind the site's creation died out rapidly in the 80s, leaving behind abandoned buildings and wasteland. Various redevelopment projects were prepared, but without success. The area fell into disuse. The dawn of a new future
Thanks to the purchase of the site by Project T&T in December 2001, Tour & Taxis was given a new lease of life. This revival started with the renovation of the Royal Warehouse and Sheds, respecting the style of the existing buildings. The Royal Warehouse now contains offices, shops, restaurants and service industries. Alongside, the Sheds host exhibitions, fairs and prestigious events. Due to this new impetus, Tour & Taxis has regained its rightful place, to the great joy of its residents, the neighbourhood, historians, lovers of fine architecture and the local residents who take pride in their city.
