Bains::Connective : the artistic laboratory

Bains Connective is a place of expression and meetings, dedicated to all kind of artists in search of free space designed to creation. Since its origins, the asbl has been part of the alternative sphere.

Killed by consumerism, art is sold, bargained, exchanged and bought... like a simple bag of potatoes! A group of friends, tired of being subjected to the diktats of a mercenary and thirsty society, decided to found an alternative asbl. In 1997, eight artists, a philosopher and a scientific took refuge in the former municipal swimming pool of Forest.

The baths

Located two fathoms from the Saint-Antoine Place, the swimming pool is a symbolic place of the district. The municipality sold it during the 80's. Then, the year of the wall of Berlin fell, the place was turned into a club for hype people... But the new club brought noisy customers into a quiet neighborhood. Saturday night fever used to start at midnight each weekend: big cars comings and goings and hundreds of rich drunk ravers peeing on the walls. But the waters overflowed in 1991, when the residents, tired by the club and its peeps, asked for peace and quiet. And then started the violent riots in Forest and Saint-Gilles.

Breeding ground

Totally aware of the place's background, the founders of Bains::Connective came with a project which also involved residents. Beside of being a experimental art's lab, the asbl offers a real social aim: throughout its activities, it collaborates with the municipality and tries to draw the residents. Its aim: confronting the ideas and developing the public's critical thinking. Bains::Connective is entirely devoted to the alternative culture, open to each artistic discipline and offering residency to each artist, no matter his age, experience, discipline, culture or nationality. The asbl questions the artistic creation, its process, its production conditions, the public's review and at the time of residencies, it encourages interdisciplinary researches. Since 2009, the asbl has left the former swimming pool and is now located at the first floor of the GC Ten Weyngaert buildings, center of the Flemish Community, which subsidizes the asbl. Bain::Connective is more than a organization supporting artists, this is a place where artistic creation comes from sharing and meeting with the others.

Main activities

- Thematics :Intense artistic research program. In practical terms, this means residencies of artists coming from different disciplines sharing their view. The residencies are organized during 2 months and make possible the dialogue that interrogates art. Here, the subject is not the most important… . The focus in put on the process! - Cinéclub : A movie projection and a workshop for kids. This activity takes place at the Wiels, in association with the municipality. Its aim is to draw the residents of the Saint-Antoine district, to make them confront their views and then to creating a atmosphere open where people can converse. - Supervlieg :An art festival for kids, organized with the municipality, libraries, cultural and community centers and the Wiels.
