Half-way between Brussels and Namur, just under twenty kilometres from Brussels, Wavre has become one of the main cities in the Walloon Brabant, along with Nivelles.
When the Brabant province was split in two along the linguistic divide, a choice had to be made between Nivelles and Wavre for the capital of this new province called the Walloon Brabant. Wavre was chosen, whereas the city of the ""Aclots"" maintained its independence for legal affairs. One way of finding a ""both can win"" situation, or ""typically-Belgian compromise"".
