When you think about Antarctic continent, you see a cold and freezing hell without life. But there is another reality, an Antarctic with amazing and unknown fauna and flora.This is of course not easy to teach the white continent, covering about 14 million of square kilometers (450 times Belgium's size!), the islands chain at the Austral Ocean's south - south Shetland islands - is more reachable at Austral summer time. One of these islands, Livingston island, is located at 120km from the Antarctic continent and has been visited in 2009 by Bart Van de Vijver, biologist at the National Botanical Garden of Belgium. There, he made scientific researches on microscopic seaweed, the diatoms.
With penguins and seal elephants as only mates. Several times, he was next to sea leopards, northern fur seals,
Great skuas which are elegant but deadly too... Southern Giant Petrels. He took a lot of pictures of this welcoming universe. The pictures exhibition will take place at the National Botanical Garden of Belgium, from the 18th of February until the 22nd April 2012.
