The metamorphosis of a pumpkin into a Jack-o'-lantern with a devilish face is the most important symbol of Halloween.

How to carve a pumpkin?

Tools required 

• A pumpkin
• A really good knife
• Gloves (to avoid getting cut)
• A big spoon or spatula to empty the pumpkin
• A thick marker to draw your shape
• At least one (small) candle

Step 1 : Draw your devil face (or any shape you'd like)

With the marker, draw a circle at the top of the pumpkin. On the smoothest side, draw the face or shape you will want it to have. If you need some inspiration, just type Jack-o'-lantern on Google. Our team attempted to draw a beautiful butterfly. Our artistic touch might not be perfect yet...

Advice: go for angles, rather than curves because the latter will be a lot more difficult to cut.

Step 2 : Decapitate your pumpkin

Put your gloves on and use the knife to cut the top off. Stick the knife in all the way and follow the marker. Once you've gone full circle, take the lid off.

Step 3 : Empty the pumpkin

Empty the pumpkin with the spoon or spatula. Take all the pips out, but don't throw them away. You can dry them, place them in the oven for 20 minutes (with salt or pepper), then eat them. Delicious!

Step 4 : Carve the face

Once more, take the knife and stick it in all around the shape you drew earlier. Be patient and careful. It's better and easier to stick the knife in over and over again, rather than try to slide it through. First, you could hurt yourself. Second, you might go too far and ruin your carving...

Step 5 : Light the candle

Once the face is carved, place a candle inside the pumpkin and turn it on. Put the "hat" back on and enjoy your piece of art.
