At times, all you need is a little lightheartedness to let strong emotions flow. It is the feat that singer Chrystel Wautier – grand-daughter of Ukrainian immigrants – manages by evoking a forgotten, painful family history. Through a jazz pop music free of all conformism, her singing is incredibly soft and clear. Surrounded by musicians just as sensitive as her, she brings tears to our eyes, be it of happiness or melancholy. Moving consciously away from jazzy gimmicks, and yet fully holding on their spirit, she ravishes us with a popular music in keeping with the times. Her songs, that tell the life stories of people who yearn for the simplest pleasures, sometimes feel like gospel, bossa or folk. A kind of music born to be shared, like only jazz can.
