Join the Relay for Life @ Braine-l'Alleud
17 May 2013 - 18 May 2013
On May 18th and 19th in Braine-l'Alleud, teams will take turns for 24 hours in a relay race along a course in which they will be sponsored. There is only one rule: to have at least one member of the team on the track at all times. The participant will either run or walk, according to his physical abilities. The Relay for Life is not a competition, but a gathering where the fact of relaying each other for 24 hours symbolizes the daily struggle, day and night, of those fighting against the disease. The municipality of Braine-l'Alleud was the first in Belgium to organize a Relay for Life.
Highlight
Three highlights punctuate those 24 hours of solidarity and togetherness:
Opening Ceremony
The first track launched by our guests of honor (the Fighters). It corresponds to the kickoff of the Relay for Life, given by the singer Jali. The fighters are people who have cancer or who have triumphed in their fight against cancer!
Candles Ceremony
This moment celebrates the memory of people who have died of cancer and those who are suffering at the moment in their fight against the disease. 1850 candles are placed all along the track and are lit when night falls.
Closing Ceremony
A time to celebrate those who have made this Relay for Life possible.
On the sidelines of the Relay, activities are organized throughout the 24h: music, theater, shows, and of course, all kinds of booths to satisfy any hunger or thirst.
The purpose of Relay for Life is to collect funds for the fight against cancer. The money is used to achieve the mission of the Foundation against Cancer: to financially support scientific research on cancer, to ensure cancer prevention and the promotion of a healthy lifestyle, and to socially support those living with cancer and their relatives.
Last year, 26 teams raised nearly € 40,000. This year, 32 teams have already registered. Interested in registering as a team or making a donation? Contact Valérie Brenez !
