The St John Passion is Bach's first passion-oratorio he wrote after his appointment as Thomaskantor at Leipzig. He was 38 years when the music was first performed during the vespers of Good Friday in 1724. The passion evokes Christ's suffering and death, and Bach's version is without precedent at that time. In terms of intensity, the St John Passion is on par with his 'big brother', the St Matthew Passion which he wrote three years later. On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, Collegium Vocale Gent performs both passions during the Klarafestival, starting from the intimate St John Passion.
