The earthquake which struck Haiti on January 12th provoked a catastrophic humanitarian situation. 200.000 deaths, tens of thousand wounded persons and hundreds of thousand homeless persons. Three million persons would have been affected by the earthquake.

Five years after the success of its appeal in favour of Tsunami victims, the NGO Belgian Consortium for emergency cases (Caritas international, Handicap International, Médecins du Monde, Oxfam-Solidarité and UNICEF Belgium) launched the operation " Haiti Lavi 12-12 ", a common appeal to help the Haitian population.

A moment of generosity

The answer of the media, the public, companies and authorities was immediate. In a few days only, an enormous momentum of solidarity sprang, in spite of the economic crisis.

More than 700 solidarity actions were registered at call center 12-12 and donations don't stop to rush, providing from private individuals, companies, children, youth groups, associations...
Result of these first two weeks of campaign: 16.149.000 euros were already poured for Haiti on the account 12-12 and on the individual accounts of five NGO members.

The operation 12-12

Funds collected by Haiti Lavi 12-12 are used to help the population of Haiti, today in the first urgency, as tomorrow in the reconstruction of the Haitian society in all its constituents. Caritas international, Handicap International, Médecins du Monde, Oxfam-Solidarité and the UNICEF were already present in the country before the disaster. They plan to help even for a long time their Haitian partners in the reconstruction of a better future. In this perspective, they have conclude a partnership with the coordinations of Belgian NGO for development cooperation ( 11.11.11 / Acodev ). In the center of their initiative, the "Building Back Better" principle. To take up this challenge, Haiti Lavi 12-12 NGO members need a lot of source of income and support. The generosity which shows, day after day, the Belgian population allows her to hope to reach the challenge.
