To foster sustainable development and to preserve our planet from global warming, several initiatives have been taken. UNICEF's water campaign that took place on Sunday, 22 March is but one example.
The Brussels-Capital Region is also in favour of this kind of thing. It has therefore decided that, as from 15 April 2009, the Manneken Pis will no longer spend any pennies between 22:00 and 07:00. The Climate and Energy Minister, Paul Magnette, will mark the event by coming to turn off the Manneken Pis tap, in person, on 15 April at 22:00.

Julien Petit, responsible for maintaining the monument's water system, testifies to the unprecedented nature of this initiative: "The Manneken Pis water has never been turned off before. It will relieve the water pipes for a few hours but we'll see what happens? There will be less water consumption, that's for sure!"

In the opinion of the fans of our beloved national symbol, Julien Petit will now sleep better at night...Charlotte Stock (st.)
