Some call me Afropean
I say: Human being
Een jonge vrouw trekt naar de grote stad om te gaan studeren, maar haar echte opleiding krijgt ze niet in de aula's van de universiteit. Wel in de bruisende slam poetry scene, waar ze in contact komt met artiesten en activisten. Zij inspireren haar niet alleen om de pen op te nemen, maar ook om zich te verdiepen in haar afkomst, waardoor ze geconfronteerd wordt met een geschiedenis vol onderdrukking en wreedheid tegenover haar volk. Hoe kan ze haar verleden met haar heden verzoenen? Haar herkomst met het land dat ze nu haar thuis noemt? Balancerend op de rand van de toekomst, wordt poëzie het middel waarmee ze haar identiteit boetseert, haar bestaan tot leven schrijft, en alledaagse beperkingen overstijgt. Spoken word wordt haar superkracht – maar tot welke prijs?
Sukina Douglas is een internationaal gerenommeerde (slam)dichteres, hiphop-artieste (Poetic Pilgrimage) en ‘onopzettelijke actrice’ (Malcolm X). Met Afropean // Human Being schrijft ze haar eerste theaterstuk, op uitnodiging van KVS.
De première is gepland in het voorjaar van 2020. Op 14 en 15 juni 2019 ben je alvast welkom voor een voorproefje tijdens een eerste try-out.

who are real.
No one will die from drinking poison at the end of my play
No one will be stabbed with a rubber knife
No fake blood will splatter out
as they lie on the theatre floor gasping for air.
Those are not my stories.
My stories
gather people
hold them together
in my embrace
My stories
are safe spaces
for tears
and emotions
and opportunities
for the audience to witness themselves
in the characters
in the moments.
My characters
are all of me
they come from me.
There is death
and there is life
continual
flow
birth and rebirth.
The butterfly symbolises that.
This play is a poem
about one girls’ life unfolding
like a flower
towards the sun
mapping out her life
following the stars
to navigate and reconcile her history
her identity
black seed
in a white ocean
Who am I
How do I love myself
in a world that doesn’t love me
How do I be myself
when I was never told how to
My features are not on the statues
in the centre of the city
My picture not on the walls
in the gallery
But I know no other home
no other tongue
Who am I
Not a rhetorical question
I’m looking for answers
Like a mother
Searching for her child in a refugee camp

9 Quai aux Pierres de Taille 1000
In 2004 werden de nieuwbouw aan de Arduinkaai in gebruik genomen. Naast de bureaus, technische en repetitieruimtes vind je in dit strak ontworpen gebouw ook een 'vlakke vloer' theaterzaal (KVS BOX) en Café Congo.
