Bernard van Orley at Saint-Géry

Bernard van Orley (before 1490-1541), the official court painter of Margaret of Austria and subsequently Mary of Hungary lived and worked in Saint Gorik, where he was the head of one of the largest studios of his time. This exhibition focuses on how van Orley became embedded in his neighbourhood - the Saint Gorik district and its surroundings — a veritable artistic micro-cosmos that was visited in the first half of the sixteenth century by Albrecht Dürer, whose church there developed into a parish church in a context of burgeoning Protestantism.
