But that didn’t prevent François I, Henry VIII and Charles V from being the three sovereigns who, during their reigns, saw Europe move from the Middle Ages into the Modern Era. And of the three, he was the most powerful. He was ruler of the Holy Empire, of the Burgundian territories, of Southern Italy and of the various Spanish states.
