From 1 June to 30 September 2019, Flemish Masters in Situ is throwing the spotlight from on the work of various artists from the fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in less accessible locations, such as the epitaph of Pieter Bruegel the Elder in the Church of our Lady of the Chapel. Jan, Bruegel’s son, wanted to honour the memory of his parents with a mausoleum in the same Kapellekerk. His good friend — none other than Peter Paul Rubens — produced the painting Christ giving the Keys to St Peter for that purpose. The original painting was sold and the one now on show is a copy.
