In July 2022, the streets surrounding the European Commission will be enlivened by an installation created by Czech artists and their European counterparts. While artists from the Czech Republic will depict the Czech flag and what this symbol means to them today, artists from other European countries will “write” a message to Brussels during the Czech EU Presidency through their works.
Unique large-scale flags will fly above Brussels’ Rue Archimède, Rue Franklin and Rue Stevin right in the heart of the EU quarter from 1 to 31 July. The motifs of the banners created by Czech artists will be based on the Czech flag – be it its colours, composition or cultural value. Lucie Jindrák Skřivánková, the Comunite Fresca collective, Vendula Chalánková and Aleš Najbrt are among the already confirmed Czech creators, who will have the opportunity to share their feelings towards one of the main symbols of the Czech Republic with the people of Brussels through the flags. At the same time, the artists and their works will bring the imagination and energy of transforming established shapes into new ones to the streets of the Schuman quarter.
A number of artists from other countries will also take part in the project, specifically ones from Spain, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Slovakia, Slovenia, Latvia, Poland and Ukraine. They, however, have a slightly different assignment, namely, to create messages for Brusselsthat reflect the artists’ questions and emotions about the current situation in Europe.
THE PROJECT IS CO-ORGANISED BY ASSOCIATION DES COMMERÇANTS CARREFOUR JEAN MONNET WITH KIND SUPPORT OF THE CITY OF BRUSSELS.
THE PROJECT IS CURATED BY TEREZA PORYBNÁ, A CULTURAL PRODUCER, CURATOR AND FORMER DIRECTOR OF CZECH CENTRE LONDON.
Full list of the artists participating will be published soon, along with more information about the individual works.
