Passages
Since time immemorial, wind instruments have been associated with death: two silver trumpets were found in Tutankhamun's burial chamber, and in the Old Testament the Archangel Gabriel plays the same instrument on Judgement Day. German composers, who, under the influence of the Lutheran Reformation, were specifically attuned to the power of rhetoric, made keen use of the relationship to death and the afterlife. In Passages, InAlto provides the evidence: in an exceptionally varied but always moving programme, funeral works by Lassus, Schütz, Buxtehude and others captivate the audience.
