Pianist Kris Defoort is forced to postpone his creation of SurSoundings for health reasons. His concert is replaced by Martin Kohlstedt's concert.
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of W.E.R.F. Records, Kris Defoort launches a brand new challenging solo project: surSoundings. As co-founder of this important Belgian jazz label – the very first album released by W.E.R.F. Records (W.E.R.F. OO1!) was his debut album Sketches of Belgium (with KD’s Basement Party) - a new composition of Kris Defoort could not be missing.
In surSoundings, the renowned composer/pianist-improviser masters the piano, recorder, electronic modules and speakers in a subtle play of light with the paintings of gifted artist Anne Marcq. His regular partners Vincent De Bast (sound engineer) & Roel Das (sound designer) accompany him in this experiment. From intimate piano sounds to orchestral outbursts, it promises to be a musical adventure in which Kris Defoort wants to surprise the audience as well as himself with, yet again, undiscovered timbres.

Kris Defoort
Kris Defoort (Belgian composer, pianist-improviser) has been active miscellaneously as a musician, improviser, pianist and composer for more than 30 years now. He played and composed original, adventurous, contemporary and quirky musical pieces: jazz compositions & improvisations, piano oeuvres, string quartets, orchestral work, opera, music theatre and dance music. Kris Defoort chooses consequently for a moving musical language that doesn’t shun an open communication with the listener. The operas of this internationally highly valued artist are being performed all over Europe & in Japan. As a pianist/improviser he performed at numerous stages and festivals worldwide. On top of that, he is a professor composition, arrangement & free improvisation at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. Since 1996, Kris Defoort is ‘Artist in Residence’ with LOD for all his opera & music theatre repertoire (www.lod.be).
He is currently working on a brand new music theatre performance with Josse De Pauw and his trio (Nicolas Thys (electric bass) & Lander Gyselinck (drums)), which will premiere in 2019. Furthermore, the Brussels opera house De Munt/La Monnaie opens its cultural season in September 2020 with Kris’ new opera The Time of Our Singing (based upon Richard Powers’ novel of the same name). This virtuoso opera will premiere next in The Philadelphia Opera (USA). Besides multiple concerts (solo, trio & with guests), several composition assignments are in prospect, e.g. a new musical oeuvre for Huelgas Ensemble (Paul Van Nevel), a piano concerto and a suite for symphonic orchestra with guest soloist Mark Turner.
