Laurie Anderson & Hsin-Chien Huang, To the Moon

To the Moon is a VR installation artwork created by artists Laurie Anderson and Hsin-Chien Huang to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. It uses images and tropes from Greek mythology, literature, science, sci fi movies and politics to create an imaginary and fabulous new moon. You are shot out from earth, walking on the surface of the moon, gliding through space debris, and flying through DNA skeletons.The work is inspired by an old Chinese legend, telling the story of a painter who made a huge vertical landscape painting of a mountain with groves of pine trees, waterfalls, tiny hikers, thatched bamboo huts and fishermen casting their nets in the sea far below. The painting took many years to make and when the painter finally finished it, he walked into it. This is also the aim of To the Moon: literally walking into a work of art.
