Nuccio Ordine

Live for others, if you want to live for yourself

Live for others, if you want to live for yourself: literature and human solidarity, the importance of the useless, of teaching, of culture Professor Ordine is a philosopher, professor of Italian literature at the University of Calabria in Italy, as well as at Harvard University and the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung, literary critic and honorary doctor of many universities. He also teaches at Yale in the United States and at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris. His works have been translated into many languages. In his lecture, Professor Ordine will testify to the importance of literature and solidarity. The dramatic experience of the pandemic, he explains, has made us understand that our insular vision of human beings was deeply untrue and unjust. It is not true that we are separate islands, as humanity is a single continent. Lockdown has made us realise how much we need one another and how much our lives need the type of knowledge that is unjustly considered useless because it does not produce profit. Nuccio Ordine argues that if we do not cultivate literature, music, philosophy, art and science, it is impossible to improve ourselves. He will explain that culture and education are essential tools to make humanity more human.Professor Ordine has chosen to call his lecture to our forum: Live for others, if you want to live for yourself: literature and human solidarity, the importance of the useless, of teaching, of culture.
