Press, a Fragile Freedom?

In recent years, the free and independent press - an essential element of any democracy - has come under pressure in an increasing number of countries. More than 85% of the world's population has seen a decline in press freedom in their country over the past five years. And the negative trend continues worldwide, with new regulations aiming to restrict freedom of expression, and journalists increasingly being threatened, sometimes even murdered, even within the EU. The war in Ukraine has further worsened this already difficult situation. In this context, Géopolis has decided to present an exhibition about press freedom worldwide, including various exhibitions: •En-GAJE - An exhibition with testimonies of journalists in exile in Brussels, with photos by Fréderic Moreau de Bellaing. •Lam Yik Fei - Hong Kong protests •Nicole Kramm - Bullets against stones (Balas contra piedras) •Asger Ladefoged – Belarus uprisings This series of exhibitions also presents texts and the World Press Freedom Index of Reporters Without Borders (RSF). A small selection of the exhibition is also visible at our radio-café L'Ascenseur (Place de L’Epée 1). Events: •Saturday 18 June 15:30-18h at Géopolis (Rue des Tanneurs 58a) : Opening and visits of the exhibitions, in presence of journalists in exile in Brussels. •Thursday 23 June at 18:30 at L’Ascenseur (Place de L’Epée 1).
