The Master and His Ten Pilgrimages to Huangshan – Exhibition of the collection of the Liu Haisu Art Museum

This is a retrospective exhibition that showcases art master Liu Haisu’s paintings of Huangshan.

From November 8, the China Cultural Center in Brussels will host a new exhibition, focusing on the works of one painting master: LIU Haisu. The Center is co-organizing this exhibition with the Liu Haisu Art Museum Liu Haisu (1896-1994) was a noted pioneer of the new art movement in China. He was an excellent educator and an esteemed scholar who dedicated himself to art, education and innovation. Thanks to his international travels, he learned European techniques and started revolutionizing art education in China. Not only was Liu an innovator of Chinese art education, he was also a brilliant artist himself. He was part of an artistic generation that combined Chinese and Western techniques to rejuvenate the native tradition. Liu donated his own works as well as his painting and calligraphy collections. These are preserved in the Liu Haisu Art Museum, the co-organizer of this exhibition. Until January 9, a selection of paintings by Liu Haisu will be shown at the Center. The works on display have a common theme: the Huangshan mountain range, which was a momentous inspiration source for Liu. Over the course of seventy years, from 1918 to 1988, he visited Huangshan ten times. The works that sprung from these journeys are a vivid record of his artistic endeavors. That is why this retrospective exhibition centers on these paintings to summarize Liu’s outstanding achievements.
