The 43-year-old poetess Hissa Hilal has as many enemies as she has fans in her home country of Saudi Arabia. Her poems are diametrically opposed to both terrorism, taboos and conservative Islam. And on top of that, the well-chosen words describe what it's like being a woman in a society ruled by men. When the courageous and popular Hilal, wearing a veil and dark clothes, goes on to the final of the TV talent show 'Millions Poet' in Abu Dhabi, she also ends up becoming a role model who can actually make a difference for millions of female viewers of a programme that normally just has male poets as participants. 'The Poetess' shakes up plenty of things you thought you might have known about Saudi Arabia. And so does Hilal, when she with her popular poetry protests against fanaticism and pays tribute to the beautiful things in life.
