The World of Bruegel in Black and White

The exhibition ‘The World of Bruegel in Black and White’ will draw you deep into the imaginary world of Bruegel, the genius and marvelous draughtsman. The Royal Library of Belgium holds a complete and unparalleled collection of Bruegel’s work ‘on paper’ and will take it out of storage for a special and exclusive exhibition during the Bruegel year.

This is the first time– and it may be the last- you can get really up close and personal with Bruegel’s prints. The exhibition ‘The World of Bruegel in Black and White’ will draw you deep into the imaginary world of Bruegel, the genius and marvelous draughtsman.

The Royal Library of Belgium holds a complete and unparalleled collection of Bruegel’s work ‘on paper’ and will take it out of storage for a very special exhibition during the Bruegel year. Don’t miss this, because after four months these rare and incredibly fragile documents will be returned to the safety of the darkness for a very long time.

Around the middle of the 16th century, Flanders emerged as the international center for the production of, and trade in, prints. Bruegel and his publisher, Hieronymus Cock, both played a key role during this period. The master craftsmanship and enterprising spirits of these two men are the focus of the exhibition.

Many of the works are held in various editions or ‘states’. However, before a first edition ever came on the market and could be distributed across the world, a print had already undergone a long process. You discover this story, from drawing to print, in the exhibition.

Admire his Italian landscapes, some of his preparatory drawings, the seven deadly sins, virtues and his other marvelous prints.

This extraordinary exhibition is set in the Palace of Charles of Lorraine, a unique 18th century hidden treasure in the heart of Brussels. Don’t miss this opportunity to discover what are perhaps the lesser-known talents of this great Flemish master!
