There all is order and beauty

For the third and last exhibition of the series exploring the dialectic between photographic and moving images in the works of the Argos collection, we look at streets, hinterlands and landscapes.

For the third and last exhibition of the series exploring the dialectic between photographic and moving images in the works of the Argos collection, we look at streets, hinterlands and landscapes. Like the oldest surviving camera photograph View from the Window at Le Gras (1826-1827) by Nicéphore Niépce (1765 – 1833), the works in the exhibition open perspectives on urban and rural surroundings. Specific spots are sometimes endpoints or places for a new beginning. They tell us about everyday journeys along now much-changed neighbourhoods or they are representations of unknown regions to be discovered. At times some places look trivial, other times astonishingly beautiful. They can have an iconic and universally recognisable aspect or in some cases the memory of their appearance has been lost over time. Beyond obvious contrasts, the relationship between natural landscapes and the built environment is much more complex than it at first appears. In this way the exhibition shows how we contemplate nature and connect to landscapes, but it also engages in a consideration of how a specific environment shapes our behaviour and imagination. It's a journey through space and time, a drift along the blurred line between practice and poetry.

The Argos art centre was founded in 1989 to stimulate and promote audio-visual art. Today the institution, which is located near the canal in downtown Brussels, is regarded as the country’s main source of reference for this type of artistic practice. Argos presents a diverse programme through exhibitions of audio-visual and visual art, film and video screenings, lectures, and performances.
