What could a car and Spinoza possibly have in common? Artist Thomas Hirschhorn’s vehicle, named after the renowned philosopher, provides us with an answer. The installation is more than a declaration of love, it is a real profession of faith. Hirschhorn approaches his work using two kinds of elements – the spiritual and the profane – echoing the Spinozist approach. The spiritual is conveyed through expressions of love from books and other objects bearing inscriptions. The profane takes the shape of glasses taped to the car. Both elements embody the heart of Spinoza’s work: the philosopher focused on the spiritual and the profane in his quest for truth.
