The Central Station was inaugurated by King Baudouin on 4 October 1952. The construction of the station — designed by Victor Horta — started in 1937 but had to cope with serious delays because of the Second World War. When Victor Horta dies in 1947, it is Maxime Brunfaut who takes over the job. The building showcases an international style characteristic of the interwar period. You will however come across references to other buildings by Victor Horta, such as the “Maison du Peuple/Volkshuis” (House of the People) and the “Palais des Beaux-Arts/Paleis voor Schone Kunsten” (Palace of Fine Arts). A passageway called Horta Gallery links the station to the Meridien hotel.
