Anyone who is even vaguely familiar with the history of the 16th century knows that in 1540 the emperor Charles V humiliated his native city of Ghent by making fifty fellow citizens parade before him in their night clothes, each with a noose around his neck.
Since then, the people of Ghent have used the term 'stroppendragers' as a nickname which they invoke to judge the great emperor in an appropriate, critical manner.
However, did you know that these historical facts are now viewed in a completely different light compared to a few decades ago? And that this new approach helps to provide a new insight into the history of many other cities, including Brussels?
Roel Jacobs explains this new way of looking at things.
The conference lasts more or less 1 hour.
