The renovation of the Atomium has been a real technical, artistic and financial challenge. It was challenged with enthusiasm, in the firm belief that everyone - Belgian citizens, tourists, private businesses and political and financial authorities - were as keen as we were to give this magnificent edifice back its original splendour.

After a highly successful renovation, widely welcomed by its faithful public, and the thorough reorganization of the square around it, this is the time to celebrate the Atomium's 50th anniversary in fitting style. It has been the very symbol of modernity and progress; and we want it to remain so, even if those concepts - the prime movers of the 20th century - have evolved with time.
