Mavis On The Main Line! A sensational American soul & gospel star! Remember 'I'll Take You There' & 'Respect Yourself'? These were hits she had with the legendary Staple Singers (on the Stax label and with Booker T & The MG's).
After previous attempts with the likes of Prince, this time Mrs Mavis Staples threw in her lot with Ry Cooder for the scorching 'We'll Never Turn Back', a CD about which Humo said: '4*... the name alone is enough to bring you to your knees...' And then again, Knack: '4/4*... here we go again, yet another record full of the traditional... a magnificent record.' This time the militant repertoire consists overwhelmingly of 'freedom songs': those bitter songs that accompanied the black struggle for emancipation. And for any doubters out there: in between, Mavis sings with Bob Dylan, Los Lobos, John Scofield, Aretha Franklin... Or with no small amount of verve honours Mahalia Jackson and Ray Charles. All in all: On My Way!
