To set up the world's expectations of the performances ahead, there's nothing like an opening ceremony alive with colour and technology to get the pulse racing... Michael Phelps was the star of Week One! Eight times The Star-Spangled Banner rang out in the Water Cube to honour his astonishing strength and prowess. Catching up with Mark Spitz and finally passing him... The Games embrace just about every sport under the sun. Some of them prefer to keep a low profile, while others thrive in the limelight as the outfits get smaller. Over to you, lady beach volleyball players... Rasta Rocket! The Jamaican track stars literally monopolised the sprint medals. The island nation's flag-bearer, Usain Bolt, helped himself to three Olympic titles, along with three stunning world records. Subject to any subsequent discoveries... Our girl sprinters finally turned on the colour for us at the end of the Games, with our relay gazelles grabbing silver and grateful cheers of the nation. And Tia Hellebaut soared over 2.05 metres in the high jump to stand on top of the world. Cue the National Anthem... FS
