In a radical adaptation with an exceptional group of international actors – who all speak different languages – Long Day’s Journey into Night thrives on language, monumental minimalism, and rock-solid performances.
This gripping autobiographical masterpiece by American Nobel Prize winner Eugene O’Neill describes one day in the life of the toxic Tyrone family. The father is an embittered, alcohol-guzzling actor at the end of his career; the mother is an unstable morphine addict in denial; the oldest son a failed actor with a beastly, cynical lifestyle; the youngest, a highly sensitive poet with a likely fatal lung condition.
In razor-sharp dialogues, each of them tries to get to grips with their disappointments – in themselves and the others. With minimal action, O’Neill drops a cluster bomb of words meant to injure and reconcile. It’s a scream for love by people who can’t live with or without each other. From early morning to midnight, they are entangled in a moving battle – one they know they can’t win.
