Yusuf Sevinçli - 'Oculus'

Yusuf Sevinçli, some of whose works are on display in the Eyes Wild Open exhibition, is also the subject of a solo exhibition in the Galerie at the Botanique.

With a career that has reached the notice of international critics and several books to his name, including Good Dog and Walking, Yusuf Sevinçli is undeniably one of the young photographers to watch, currently. His peculiarly sensitive world captivates viewers with its contrasts and profound blacks. The artist takes us with him in his daytime and night-time ramblings. There we discover disarming solitary landscapes, stolen, sensual moments of intimacy. As if in a dream, we allow ourselves to be overcome, little by little, by a state of intoxication, of meditation, and even sometimes a spike of anxiety.

With his lens focused outwards, it is nonetheless an interior world that the artist is conveying. As if everything he captures in the world around him only shows itself in order to translate images buried in the meanders of his own daydreams and torments. In his dynamic shots, one can make out feverish gestures, an urgent energy, but above all the untamed gaze of the photographer, capable of filtering reality to pick out a poem in each instant.

Yusuf Sevinçli (1980, lives and works in Istanbul). Having completed a degree in the Communication department of Marmara University in 2003, the following year he took a Masterclass in documentary photography in Sweden. He built up his personal body of work through several series, including ‘Good Dog’, which have been the subject of numerous exhibitions, both individual and collective, in Turkey, in Europe and around the world (Month of the Photo in Moscow, PhotoBiennale in Thessaloniki, Fotografia Europa Reggio Emilia photography festival in Italy, Fotografie Noorderlicht in the Netherlands, FotoFreo in Australia…).

He is represented in France by the Les filles du calvaire Gallery, Paris and in Turkey by Galerist, Istanbul.
